A Bit About Me
I’m Dr. Karyn Horowitz, a board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist with more than 25 years of experience supporting children, teens, and families. I graduated from Yale Medical School and completed my psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Since 2003, I have been part of the Bradley Hospital and Brown University Health communities, where I most recently served as the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs of Bradley Hospital, as well as Director of Outpatient Child Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Services at Brown University Health.

My clinical work focuses on providing thoughtful, evidence-based, and compassionate care for young people, adults, and families. I have extensive experience in outpatient psychiatry, psychotherapy, crisis management, suicide prevention, and psychopharmacology, and I have spent my career helping families navigate complex emotional, relational, behavioral, and developmental challenges.

In addition to my clinical practice, I am a Clinical Associate Professor at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where I have been honored with teaching awards. I am also actively engaged in community behavioral health efforts, including work focused on culturally responsive care and improving access to mental health services across Rhode Island.

At the heart of my work is a belief that children and families thrive when they feel understood, supported, and empowered. My goal is to create a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive space where we can work together toward meaningful and sustainable emotional health.

Professional Experience
2020-2025
Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital
During my five years in this role, I initiated and led multiple quality and safety projects aimed at improving care for children and enhancing family engagement, while also enhancing staff safety. At the Brown University Health system level, my work focused on suicide-prevention initiatives, developing policy frameworks, and improving patient flow.
2015-2025
Director, Outpatient Child Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Brown University Health
In this role, I oversaw the development and expansion of numerous outpatient child psychiatry programs grounded in a family-centered approach. My goal was to provide high-quality care to as many children and families across Rhode Island as possible at Bradley and Hasbro Hospitals as well as Gateway Healthcare, regardless of insurance coverage. During my tenure, I guided the growth of therapy and psychiatry services, group therapy offerings, a program for children with autism and developmental disabilities, a full-model DBT-A program and multi-family skills groups, pediatric neuropsychology services, OT/SLP services, and a dedicated clinic for Latine youth.
2003-2020
Director, Outpatient Services at Bradley Hospital
In this role, I focused on expanding the outpatient services offered directly at Bradley Hospital. Prior to this leadership period, the hospital’s efforts were concentrated primarily on higher levels of care—such as inpatient, partial, and residential treatment. We recognized that strengthening outpatient care was essential to helping children remain at home with their families, stay connected to their communities, and prevent declines in functioning.
2003-present
Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist
My greatest professional joy has always been caring for children, adults, and families. I am committed to supporting people through the treatment of their mental health conditions so they do not feel alone in their struggles and can find relief from their symptoms and suffering. My approach emphasizes involving the important people in their lives who can offer support throughout their journey toward improved health.
